Post-Abortion Care in Senegal - Additional Studies

  • Some studies show that uterine evacuation methods not recommended by the World Health Organization such as dilation and curettage and digital evacuation (digital curage) continue to be used (Baynes et al. 2021a; Suh 2021b).

  • In addition, postabortion care remains very expensive. A 2016 national study estimated that the average cost of postabortion care was approximately $27 and that patients bore up to 20% of all health systems costs in the form of fees (Lince-Deroche et al., 2020). A study of eight facilities in the Dakar region estimated out-of-pocket costs at $94, or about 15% of women's annual wages. In addition, patients who received analgesics paid 30% more, suggesting that the most economically vulnerable patients may not receive adequate pain relief (Baynes et al., 2021a; Baynes et al., 2021b).
